How a Thermos Flask Works (English)

A Thermos Flask is a specialized storage vessel designed to maintain the temperature of its contents, keeping hot liquids hot and cold liquids cold for extended periods. It achieves this by virtually eliminating heat transfer, which naturally occurs when there is a temperature difference between a liquid and its surroundings.

Heat transfers through three primary mechanisms: Conduction (transfer through solid contact), Convection (transfer through fluid movement like air or water), and Radiation (transfer via electromagnetic waves). A thermos is meticulously engineered to block all three of these pathways:

The Vacuum Gap: The core of a thermos is a double-walled container. The space between these two inner and outer walls is completely evacuated of air, creating a vacuum. Because conduction and convection require a physical medium (like gas molecules) to transfer heat, this vacuum acts as a perfect barrier. Heat simply cannot cross this empty space.

Silvered Surfaces: Heat can still travel through a vacuum via thermal radiation (just as the sun's heat travels through space). To counter this, the walls facing the vacuum gap are silvered or highly polished. This reflective surface acts like a mirror for thermal radiation, bouncing the heat back into the beverage (if it's hot) or reflecting external ambient heat away (if it's cold).

The Stopper: The opening of the flask is a major vulnerability for heat loss. It is sealed with an airtight, insulated stopper usually made of plastic or silicone. This completely blocks outside air from entering and inside air from escaping, shutting down convection at the top.

By neutralizing conduction, convection, and radiation simultaneously, a thermos flask creates an isolated thermal environment that preserves the initial temperature of your beverage for hours on end.
